Rhett Walker Tells Story Behind New EP

Rhett released an Instagram Story to talk about his new EP that came out tonight at Midnight. There was some great info in there about how this EP came to be. He talked about his co-writers, what the songs mean to him, and he also gave a brief commentary on each track. I didn’t want anyone to miss out in case they didn’t get a chance to see his Instastory, so I transcribed parts of it here. I hope you enjoy reading it!

In Rhett’s own words…

What’s up everybody? I cannot believe it’s here. Tonight at midnight my brand new self-titled EP (Six songs I think you’re gonna dig, three of them that came out already.) comes out.

I started working on this EP about May of last year, just trying to craft songs that told the new Rhett Walker Band story of kinda where we’ve been with the first two records and where we are now.

The year before I’d taken off just to be home and lead worship at my church and kinda just refocus and re-evaluate life and the lens I was looking through. And so, I said man I want to correctly write about THAT kind of stuff.

So these songs are full of just how we see the world, how we see our lives, how we see our family, just the lens that we look through. About peace and grace and mercy and love and walking in that. And just waking up every morning and trying to live life to the fullest, from “Say Hello” that’s out on radio right now to “Peace in the Family” to a song you haven’t heard yet called “Love Done” and “Heavenly Home.”

I’ve probably had the funnest I’ve ever had making this record. I went back with Paul Moak who I did the first two records “Come To The River” and “Here’s To The Ones” with. I went back with Jeff Pardo who I wrote “When Mercy Found Me” and a bunch of others. And then I kinda grabbed a bunch of different producers and writers from other circles that I’ve never worked with and just kinda collaborated in that way to see kinda what would happen, if it’d be cool.

So Jeff Pardo, he produced some songs on this, and like I said, Paul Moak at The Smoakstack, we did a bunch of stuff live to tape with him and then “Peace in the Family” with Solly. So I think you’re gonna dig it.

Say Hello: It’s out at radio, it’s the single right now. It’s about saying hello to the brand new you and not walking every day holding onto the baggage and crap that we usually track along with us.

Peace in the Family: I wrote that with Solly (Solomon) and Lauren Olds. You might remember Solly from Family Force 5, but we went in and wrote a song about love is always free, and we need peace in the family, and that’s all we need.

Love Done: You haven’t got this one, no one’s heard this one. It only comes out tonight with the rest of the EP. This is everything the Rhett Walker Band has always been. Just southern, swampy, nasty.

Murderer: Wrote this song back in 2011, it’s just never found its place on a record until now. It’s a song about no one’s sin is bigger than anyone elses’ and we’re all the reason Jesus had to lay down his life for us.

Like Your Father Does: I debuted this song at the Opry this past year. It’s already out. Very important song to me on this record about my kids, and my Dad, and my Paw Paw. So go check it out.

Heavenly Home: Title kinda says everything it needs to. Don’t sleep on this one, I think this will be one of everybody’s favorites. Wrote it with my brother Brett Perkins and I think you will dig it.
